The memo is released, but the arguing isn’t over. While Republicans are claiming that FBI Deputy Director McCabe testified before the committee in December 2017 that no surveillance warrant would have been sought from the FISC (FISA court) without the Steele dossier information. Also, the Christopher Steele dossier was funded by Democrats and anti-Trump groups, which wasn’t told to the FISA court. Without that, there might not have been a FISA warrant. Who is to know at this point?
Why does all of this matter? That information is key to why Republicans are saying the FBI is biased towards Trump and abused its powers. However, we really need to discuss what wasn’t emphasized at all. The FBI was looking into connections with Russia before the dossier. Republicans have played these connections down from the beginning, even when there was proof of it. At a time when the President should be trying to be completely honest with the American people, he continues to lie and call honest reporting fake news. This is exactly the tactics used by Russia as Putin took power. The President has been following the script: smear the media, make the American people ignore the fact that a cyber-attack was waged that swayed the election, and distract people as you pass sweeping tax cuts that will hurt most Americans in a few years. The President also ONLY released information that helped his cause, not a complete picture of what was testified to by the FBI Director. The American people deserve the entire picture, not just his version. Then again, the memo probably should not have been released at all.
A few people have stood strong against this. Elizabeth Warren continues to pressure the President. Celebrities like Oprah and Morgan Freeman have stood strong against his actions. Democrats in key positions of Intelligence, Education, and Tax/Finance have all grilled any appointments Trump made. The problem is the appointments are still getting through. Even Republicans that disagree with Trump are following his lead and putting the Party ahead of the American people.
That is my greatest problem. These politicians are putting American’s second to their agenda. Arkansas does not benefit from the tax laws that just passed, yet all of our Republican representatives voted for it. Children will lose healthcare, but who is fighting for them? I guess that since they can’t vote, they don’t matter. Teacher retirement age went up, and nobody said anything about that. Arkansans are hardworking people that need to keep their eyes open.
What can you do? Get involved. Stay informed and vote. Remember that America is a land for the people, by the people. These politicians only make the rules as long as we keep electing them. Common sense, middle of the road, politicians are out there. We do not have to settle for the extreme right to make the laws we all have to live by.
